Why calculating exact date differences is harder than it seems
Counting the days between two dates sounds simple, but manual counting quickly runs into complications: months have different numbers of days, leap years add an extra day to February every four years, and it's easy to make off-by-one errors when counting inclusively versus exclusively. Why the years/months/days breakdown isn't a simple division
You might expect that dividing total days by 30 gives you an accurate month count, but because months vary between 28 and 31 days, this approach drifts increasingly inaccurate the larger the date range gets. This tool instead calculates the years, months, and days breakdown by working through actual calendar months one at a time, which is why it correctly handles edge cases like date ranges crossing February in a leap year.
Does this include both the start and end date?
The day count reflects the number of days that pass between the two dates, not an inclusive count of both endpoints — for example, from January 1 to January 2 is counted as 1 day, not 2.
Does this account for leap years?
Yes, the calculation is based on actual calendar dates, so any leap year February 29th falling within your date range is automatically included in the day count.
Why does the month count look approximate?
The "months (approx.)" figure divides total days by an average month length (30.44 days), which is useful for a quick estimate. The more precise years/months/days breakdown below it accounts for actual calendar month lengths instead.
